Outer Banks is an American action–adventure mystery teen drama web television series created by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke that premiered on Netflix on April 15, 2020.

                                     

1. Premise

Outer Banks follows a group of teenagers in the Outer Banks of North Carolina who are called "Pogues" and are determined to find out what happened to the missing father of the groups ringleader, John B. Stokes. Along the way, they discover a legendary treasure that is tied to John Bs father.

Chased by the law and a wealthy and superior group called the "Kooks" from Figure Eight, the Pogues seek to overcome obstacles such as drugs, love, fighting, friendship, money and how the rich keep on winning in order to complete John Bs fathers goal that he had been working on for 20 years.

  • Madison Bailey as Kiara "Kie", the daughter of a successful restaurant owner who hangs out with the Pogues and Sarahs former best friend. She is technically a Kook as she comes from a wealthy family and lives in Figure Eight, but the Kooks reject her as a Kook.
  • Rudy Pankow as JJ, John Bs best friend since the third grade who is a surfer.
  • Drew Starkey as Rafe Cameron, Sarahs older brother.
  • Jonathan Daviss as Pope, the brains of the Pogues.
  • Chase Stokes as John B, the ringleader of the Pogues.
  • Charles Esten as Ward Cameron, Sarahs father and a wealthy business owner who lives on the wealthier part of the Outer Banks known as "Figure Eight.”
  • Austin North as Topper, Sarahs ex-boyfriend and fellow Kook who despises the Pogues.
  • Madelyn Cline as Sarah Cameron, daughter of the wealthy business owner, Ward Cameron and John Bs love interest. She is referred to by many as the princess of the Kooks, however, her rebellious side often rejects the Kook life and gets her mixed up with the Pogues.

3. Production

Development

On May 3, 2019, it was announced that Netflix had given the production a series order for a first season consisting of ten episodes. The series was created and executive produced by Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. The series was released on April 15, 2020.

Casting

Alongside the initial series announcement, it was reported that Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, Charles Esten, Austin North, and Drew Starkey were cast in starring roles. On July 2, 2019, Caroline Arapoglou joined the cast in a recurring role.

Filming

Principal photography for the series began on May 1, 2019 in Charleston, South Carolina.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an approval rating of 70% based on 20 reviews, with an average rating of 6.62/10. The websites critical consensus reads, Outer Banks over-the-top melodrama is balanced out by a strong sense of adventure thats bound to hook those looking to capture that summer feeling." On Metacritic, it has a weighted average score of 61 out of 100 based on 9 reviews, indicating "generally favorable reviews".
