1. Synopsis

Its the festival of Snoggletog on New Berk, but Hiccup isnt feeling the holiday spirit. First, he misses his friend Toothless; second, he has just found out that his daughter Zephyr and his son Nuffink have found Stoicks old journals written before Vikings and dragons became friends and now believe that all dragons are dangerous and should be destroyed. To help him possibly change their minds, Astrid suggests reviving the old traditions of Snoggletog, including a play in which Stoick the Vasts memory will be honored and perhaps the childrens minds changed. Meanwhile on the Hidden World island, Toothless, through the use of sand drawings, tells his three children about his best friend Hiccup, inspiring them to make a secret flight to New Berk. While Hiccup struggles through casting and stage managing problems, the three Night Lights secretly spy on him until they are discovered by their angry parents who have followed them after finding that they had absconded. The scolding is halted as they watch the play, which includes Hiccup playing Toothless in a mechanical suit and Gobber playing Stoick. Naturally, things dont go quite as planned, but when Hiccup in his suit is temporarily incapacitated, Toothless sneaks in and plays himself opposite Gobber in a heart-touching scene showing how the Vikings represented by "Stoick" and dragons "Toothless" became friends, reenacting the Forbidden Friendship scene in the first movie where Hiccup and Toothless first bonded. Hiccups children are both excited and touched by the play, but when Zephyr goes to congratulate her father she instead comes face to face with Toothless. The two look at each other silently, then Toothless flies off to join the Light Fury and their children. Hiccup, unaware of what has been going on and rescued from his suit, thanks Gobber for honoring his father, but is amazed that his children now love dragons. At their house, they find that their offering of fish previously laid out hopefully for Toothless is gone, replaced by a glowing crystal from the Hidden World; rushing back outside, Hiccup, Astrid and Gobber see Toothless and his family flying away against the moon. Astrid suggests that next time they should visit Toothless, and the film concludes with a replaying of the epilogue from How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
